Virtualization As Path To Windows 7 Migration

Migrating to a new operating system is never a smooth process. The larger your network, user base, applications installed and in use, and hardware assets, the more that can go wrong. Smart data centers will throughly test long before the actual roll out to insure everything is running as it should. It is estimated over forty percent of nine hundred IT professionals surveyed will begin their Windows 7 migration and deployment by the end of the year. What is making the transition easier are the new desktop virtualization utilities created by companies such as Microsoft, Citrix, VMware, and other related companies.
Organizations including Expedia has proven through compatibility testing, pilot testing, then employing a larger roll out of Windows 7, that the utilization of application virtualization makes the task a lot quicker, and easier, with far less mistakes during the process. Expedia’s end user technology manager, Mike Peterson, was quoted, "We looked at the cost of just moving to a virtualized packaged or a virtualized instance of that application, and we went from 24 to 30 hours worth of work to four to eight hours, a huge time and cost reduction." By using the virtual desktop infrastructure utility from Microsoft, employees in Expedia’s contact centers with thin clients will have admittance to desktops lying within virtual machines on data center servers.
The director of network and systems engineering of Continental Airlines, Eric Craig, says, "You have all these applications and you just want to know that they work; you don't want to have to reverse engineer them. And our experience is that if you throw them on a VDI asset, they work."
Both companies performed a copious amount of testing, in terms of applications and compatibility, before making the final move. Expedia used a very systematic approach that paid off in the long run. With a total application count of twenty two thousand, Expedia decreased the number of business critical applications down to four hundred and fifty. From there, they ascertained two hundred applications were in use by fifty or more employees. The next step was to determine how many of the two hundred were compatible with Windows 7. Twenty applications were not supported in their current revision, and seven of those twenty were not going to be supported. The remaining decision was either to upgrade the apps, or start using a different solution. As the seven remaining applications were going to be arriving towards end of life at the end of the year, it was an easy decision to make. Due to the extensive testing, migrating to Windows 7 was an easy process.
