Security Breaches Are Everywhere

Hackers of personal information can arise at any moment, from any location. The most recent bit of intrusion news to hit the public was the revealing of approximately one hundred and fourteen thousand email addresses of iPad owners. In all fairness to Apple, the leak occurred from AT&T, the service provider for iPhone and iPads.
The hackers in question were able to use an existing script on AT&T’s web site to discover the unique ID address of the SIM cards in the iPad devices. Many of the email addresses belonged to White House personnel and other government individuals, including the military, technology sources, and the media. AT&T, to their credit, did acknowledge the intrusion did happen and make good in fixing the problem.
A spokesman for AT&T, Mark Siegel stated in a released email, "This issue was moved to the highest awareness of the organization and was fixed by Tuesday. We have disabled the feature that revealed the addresses of the e-mails.”
It does not seem the user’s account information has not been compromised. Since the breach included government and military email addresses, the FBI has been called in to investigate. A spokesman for the FBI, Jason Pack was quoted as saying, "The Federal Bureau of Investigation is aware and initiated an investigation."
While several analysts mentioned the security intrusion is minor, Walter Piecyk, and analyst with BTIG, said, "Security is a topic all organizations must face."
A very true statement. Security isn’t a matter to be taken lightly, yet the number of companies who ignore the warning signs, or do not have adequate security within their infrastructure is staggering. And the breaches happen everyday. The AT&T breach is the latest one to become very public. Businesses on all levels need to be aware of the cost incurred when a breach occurs, either to its brand and company reputation, or the actual dollar amount lost in the form of theft, embezzlement, or other related means that deplete finances on a professional or personal realm.
Training must become a necessity if the security of businesses will every diminish. CISSP training and certification as an information security expert must be mandatory, with a trained professional onsite, auditing and putting into place the tenets of access control, business recovery, telecommunications, data recovery, network security, environmental security, operational security, and more. K Alliance is a fine location for quality training courses including information security certification training.
